The 4C’s of Meaningful Technology Integration in #PhysEd


Coach Note
Coach Note is an incredibly versatile app with which you can create, save and share complex sports tactics that translate effortlessly into real-life sports plays. Check out how I used it for TGfU through Coach Note.

Explain Everything
Whiteboard app that I have used to remove the barrier of literacy skills for early years students. By recording their voice over the top of a picture it allows these younger students to reflect in a more meaningful way. Check out an example here as Denzil explains the importance of looking at the target when throwing.

Ubersense/Coach's Eye
Video analysis made easy. Compare videos side by side, annotate them and record your vocal feedback over the video. Check out how #PhysEd legend Blue Jay Bridgeused Ubersense for video analysis in his classes.

QR Codes
QR Codes can be such a valuable tool in your #PhysEd classes as they allow you to have your students access exactly what you want quickly and easily. All they need to do is Scan the QR Code and they are taken to the resource immediately. BAM Video Delay
Allow your students to reflect instantly on their performances with BAM Video Delay. This app allows your to show live or delayed video on your device for instant viewing post performance. More than just a storage solution. Tool for real time collaboration, flipping your classroom, portfolio creation and storage.

Google Sites integrate seamlessly with the full range of Google Apps for Education and at my school our students use this platform to create their ePortfolios.

Starting a class blog is a fantastic way to share what is happening in your program as well as connect with your community. At my school we use a fantastic blogging platform called Weebly that is super simple to use. All you need to do is drop and drag and you have your blog. Check out www.issphysed.weebly.com to see how I use it at my school for my #Physed program.

What not start your own twitter feed for your classes and start sharing the learning that is taking place in your #PhysEd lessons.

Vine is a great tool for recording quick highlight videos that are easily shareable. Check out my school Vine feed here.


Why should you bother looking online to connect? One read of Joey Feith's article, The New PD: Igniting your Passion with the Power of Social Media for ACHPER National should give you all the reason you need. 

Once you have read it and you are ready to join the thousands of other physical educators online then Joey's handy Twitter101 presentation is a great place to get started. Trust me it will be the best thing you ever did!

The brain child of Nathan Horne & Joey Feith this 45 min to 1 hour monthly show has everything you need to stay current and cutting edge in the world of technology in physical education.
Collaborate with other Schools around the World
Read all about Matt Pomeroy's students and their Global So You Think You Can Dance? challenge  which involved collaboration between schools in the US & UK. It was so good and gained so much attention it even made it onto CNN!

Check out as Blake Kampen from Western Australia and his students compete against Anthony Coe & Anita Welsh's girls from Ogilvie in Tasmania in the 7 Min Run Challenge. A fantastic example of collaboration between schools on a national level.


Inquiry in #PhysEd 101:
The What, Why & How?

Inquiry is not something that can be "done" in a lesson or a unit. It's a philosophy for the way you plan, deliver and assess within your physical education curriculum. The way that makes the most sense to me to explain it is to consider inquiry based learning as a lense through which you see bigger concepts and ideas in physical education. Lynn Erickson describes it simply and fantastically in this blog post on The Power of Conceptual Lenses

Inquiry based learning allows for students to share their wonderings and to become more of a stakeholder in the learning process. Rather than the teacher being the gatekeeper controlling who comes and goes, it allows students to enter the learning in any way they feel comfortable and for the teacher to support them to climb the fence.

Inquiry is a carefully planned and guided process through which students can discover and go deeper with their learning. Meaningful student inquiry is not just giving kids free choice and hoping they learn something, it's giving kids guided free choice. Provoking them and guiding them down certain paths with your choice of equipment available, or by questioning them on their choices. Activities still need to be planned, perhaps even in greater detail than previously to ensure that students will get to where you want them to by the end of the process. It's about planning carefully your provocations, taking note of their wonderings and questions, supporting them to explore further, giving them feedback on their performances, suggesting ways for them to find out how they can improve and encouraging them to take action on their new knowledge.
